Making Friends with English
Making Friends with English for Short-term Teams (MFEST) is a three-week, online, collaborative course that prepares individuals going cross-culturally to teach English in short-term ministry contexts. The course provides training in strategies and methods, as well as in cultural sensitivity and sharing the Gospel. Although it is designed for individuals who have little or no previous training in teaching English to non-native speakers, it could also be a refresher for those who have experience in teaching.
Course Detail
MFEST begins with a one-week introduction to course mechanics, followed by two weeks covering these themes: Identifying with Language Learners, Communicating Effectively with Language Learners, Sharing the Gospel Across Cultures, Sharing Your Testimony, Strategies for Teaching, ESL/EFL Teaching Methods, Exploring Teaching Materials, and Classroom Management.
The course requires four to six hours of work per week, depending on your reading speed, level of involvement, etc. All course materials are provided online within the course with the exception of the teaching curriculum the team will use. This should be obtained before the course begins. The course is asynchronous, meaning that there is not a set time that you need to be online. You can participate at the time that works best for you, as long as you keep up with due dates and forum conversations.
